On a tragic Fourth of July evening in 2020, a road rage incident in Spotsylvania, Virginia, escalated into a fatal encounter that claimed the life of 38-year-old Joe Swick and his brother, Fred Swick. The two brothers were found deceased in their vehicle in the middle of Fox Run Drive after the altercation.
The events of that night unfolded after a confrontation on the road. Danny Lee Huffman, who was 48 at the time, was driving with his 17-year-old son when the dispute with the Swick brothers began. The conflict continued until the vehicles came to a stop, leading to a physical altercation. Huffman, who had been drinking heavily throughout the day, claimed he was cut on the arm during the fight.
Following the initial dispute, Huffman retrieved a firearm and fired multiple shots into the Swick brothers' vehicle, fatally wounding both of them. It was Huffman himself who placed the 911 call, initially reporting that he had been injured in a fight. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Joe and Fred Swick deceased in their car. Investigators later found the weapon used in the shooting submerged in a pond on Huffman's property.
Danny Lee Huffman was arrested and initially charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and felony child endangerment. These charges were later upgraded. During his trial, Huffman argued that he acted in self-defense. However, a jury convicted him of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. For his role in the deaths of Joe and Fred Swick, Huffman was sentenced to 206 years of incarceration, with all but 48 years suspended. An appeal of his conviction in 2024 was unsuccessful.
