On the night of April 30, 2022, a dispute that began inside a local restaurant in Spotsylvania, Virginia, tragically escalated, ending the life of 35-year-old Shawn D. Hastings. A White / Caucasian male, Hastings was a resident of Spotsylvania. The argument moved from inside Fatty's Taphouse to the parking lot in the 10100 block of Patriot Highway. It was there, at approximately 11:20 p.m., that gunshots rang out.
When deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they discovered Hastings suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of first responders, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses were able to provide a description of the shooter and the vehicle he fled in, setting in motion a swift investigation.
Thanks to the information provided by witnesses, authorities quickly identified a suspect. In the early hours of the following morning, law enforcement, with the assistance of the Caroline County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police, located and apprehended 34-year-old Jesse Dean Beebout at his residence in the Lake Land'Or community in Caroline County. During the arrest, a firearm was recovered. Investigators also noted that Beebout had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his hand.
Following his arrest, Jesse Dean Beebout was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Before being booked, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his hand injury. After his release from the hospital, he was transported to the Rappahannock Regional Jail, where he was held without bond.
