In a grim discovery on February 1, 2021, the dismembered body of 20-year-old Dylan Dakota Whetzel was found in a wooded area of Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The Stafford resident, a male, had been reported missing prior to the discovery of his remains, which were found concealed in multiple trash bags. An investigation quickly determined that Whetzel had been shot in the head multiple times before his body was dismembered with an ax.
The investigation led to the arrests of three individuals: Brennan Thomas, then 19, Domonic Samuels, then 18, and Bronwyn Meeks, then 21. Initially, another individual, Dominic McCall, was arrested, but charges against him were later dropped based on forensic evidence. The three remaining suspects, who were reportedly former high school classmates, faced an array of over 80 charges, including first-degree murder, murder by mob, and defilement of a dead body.
As the case unfolded, details of the motive behind the brutal slaying emerged. The conflict reportedly began when Whetzel confronted Meeks about selling drugs to his friend, who had suffered a non-fatal overdose. Fearing the repercussions, Meeks orchestrated a plan with Samuels, her boyfriend at the time, and Thomas to murder Whetzel. On the night of the murder, the trio lured Whetzel out under the pretense of going to a party. In what was chillingly referred to in text messages as his 'last meal,' they stopped at a McDonald's before driving to a remote location where he was shot and killed. Following the murder, Thomas and Samuels purchased an ax to dismember the body. The crime was discovered after Thomas's grandfather encountered Thomas and Samuels in the woods and, becoming suspicious, found the remains.
In February 2022, Bronwyn Meeks pleaded guilty to over 30 charges, including first-degree murder. She was subsequently sentenced to serve 42 years in prison. The other two defendants also faced the extensive list of charges brought against them by a special grand jury.
