On a tragic Fourth of July in 2020, 39-year-old Fred Swick, a male resident of Spotsylvania, Virginia, lost his life in a violent roadside confrontation. The evening took a fatal turn when Fred and his 38-year-old brother, Joe Swick, were discovered deceased inside their vehicle, which was stopped in the middle of Fox Run Drive. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call around 10:15 p.m. and found the two brothers had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a road rage incident. The man who placed the 911 call, 48-year-old Danny Lee Huffman of Spotsylvania, became the primary suspect. Huffman, who had his 17-year-old son with him at the time, claimed to have been involved in a dispute with the Swick brothers and sustained a cut on his arm. Authorities later located the firearm believed to have been used in the shootings submerged in a pond on Huffman's property.
Following the incident, Danny Lee Huffman was taken into custody and held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. He was initially charged with two counts of malicious wounding, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and felony child endangerment, with the expectation that the charges would be upgraded as the investigation progressed. The authorities confirmed that Huffman and the Swick brothers did not know each other prior to the deadly encounter.
