Jalen Duree Stevens, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on September 10, 2019, in Kansas City, Missouri. On that Tuesday afternoon, Stevens was a passenger in a black Ford Mustang being driven by 20-year-old Makih T. Briggs near 79th and Blue Ridge Boulevard. The tragic events began to unfold following an argument at a gas station.
After the dispute, a black 2002-2008 4-door Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, which was pulling a trailer with landscaping equipment, followed the Mustang.
The occupants of the truck opened fire on the car, striking both Stevens and Briggs. The shooting spanned several blocks, with police later finding shell casings and glass near 78th and Blue Ridge Boulevard. The Mustang eventually ran off the road and struck a parked vehicle.
When police arrived at the scene around 3:15 p.m., they found both men inside the car with gunshot wounds. Jalen Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene. Makih Briggs was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The brazen rush-hour shooting left the local community in shock. Despite a detailed description of the suspect's vehicle, no arrests have been made in the double homicide. The Kansas City Police Department has offered a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. The investigation remains open as authorities continue to seek leads to bring justice for the families of Jalen Stevens and Makih Briggs.
