In the evening hours of May 7, 2024, a gathering at a home on Corrington Avenue in south Kansas City was shattered by gunfire. When police responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m., they discovered a chaotic and tragic situation. One man, identified as 23-year-old Prophet Thompson of Independence, Missouri, was found inside the residence with fatal gunshot wounds.
Two other individuals, a woman and a teenage boy, were also shot and critically injured.
The events of that night unfolded amidst a large gathering where multiple eyewitnesses were present, including several young children. An argument between two groups escalated, leading to the eruption of gunfire. Prophet Thompson suffered gunshot wounds to his lower abdomen and upper thigh and was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured woman was discovered outside the house with a gunshot wound to her chest, while the wounded teenage boy was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators quickly began to piece together the events. A teenage suspect was taken into custody the following day and was held at the county juvenile justice center. Four months later, authorities announced that Jewell Cobbins, a teenager from Raytown, had been charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault, and three counts of armed criminal action in connection with the incident.
According to court documents, surveillance footage from the hospital where the injured teenager was taken showed Cobbins and a female hiding firearms behind a rock wall across the street. Police recovered three pistols from that location. During questioning, Cobbins initially denied having a gun but later admitted to returning fire after being shot at. Witnesses told police the shooting occurred after an attempt was made to get Cobbins and others to leave the house, which led to the fatal confrontation.
