In the early evening of September 24, 2020, a violent encounter in Hampton, Virginia, claimed the lives of 25-year-old Maurice Bailey and his 50-year-old mother, Lois Bailey. The tragic events unfolded around 5:41 p.m. in the 200 block of Apple Avenue, where police responded to a call of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene with three gunshot victims. Maurice and Lois Bailey were both pronounced dead at the location.
A third individual, another son of Lois Bailey, was also found with injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a suspect, Torrey R. Whitlow, a 35-year-old Hampton man. Reports suggest that the deadly shooting may have stemmed from a dispute that had occurred earlier in the day. Following the incident, the Hampton Police Division sought the public's help in locating Whitlow, who was considered armed and dangerous. Warrants were issued for his arrest on a litany of charges, including two counts of murder, one count of aggravated malicious wounding, and multiple firearm offenses.
After a manhunt that lasted nearly two months, Torrey Whitlow was taken into custody. On November 18, 2020, members of the Hampton Police Division, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, located and arrested Whitlow in the city of Hampton without incident. He was subsequently held in custody as the legal process moved forward.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Torrey Whitlow faced trial for his role in the deaths of Maurice and Lois Bailey and the wounding of the third victim. He was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder for the deaths of both Maurice and his mother, as well as malicious wounding and several firearm-related charges. An appeal of his convictions was later denied, affirming the judgment of the trial court and bringing a measure of legal closure to the violent episode that cut short the lives of a son and his mother.
