Jamoine Terrell Tyler, a 32-year-old male, tragically lost his life on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, in Richmond, Virginia. The fatal encounter unfolded in the Whitcomb Court neighborhood, specifically in the 2300 block of Ambrose Street. On that evening, around 6 p.m., Richmond Police were called to the scene for a report of a person shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Tyler suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chilling sequence of events that occurred right outside his home. Tyler was with his wife and nine-year-old daughter when he walked across his backyard to another residence. As he was leaving that second residence to return home, a man named Kevin Mitchell, who had been lying in wait, called out to him. Mitchell then opened fire on Tyler. Despite his attempts to flee back to the safety of his own house, Tyler was pursued by Mitchell, who discharged a total of ten rounds. Three of the bullets found their mark, striking Tyler in the abdomen, left thigh, and left knee. The wound to his abdomen proved to be the fatal injury.
Surveillance footage from the area played a crucial role in identifying the assailant, capturing clear images of Kevin Mitchell walking both to and from the scene with a firearm in his hand. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest. Mitchell, however, managed to evade law enforcement for several months. His time as a fugitive came to an end on May 6, 2021, when he was apprehended shortly after committing another murder in the nearby Henrico County.
In December 2022, Kevin Mitchell faced justice for the murder of Jamoine Terrell Tyler. He was tried in Richmond City Circuit Court and was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder. For this crime, he received a life sentence. In addition to the life sentence for the murder, he was given an additional three years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ensuring he would be held accountable for the violent act that cut short a man's life and devastated a family.
