In the early morning hours of April 7, 2021, the life of 18-year-old Vinshaun Daecorey Johnson was tragically cut short on Montvale Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 4:28 a.m., police officers discovered Johnson unresponsive in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another male teenager was also found at the scene with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into Johnson's death led to the arrests of three individuals. Juhwaan Barnes, 19, Justin Oliver, 18, and Kevon Bynum, 19, all from Richmond, were charged in connection with the homicide. The charges brought against the suspects included murder, malicious wounding, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Bynum faced an additional charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
In a subsequent court appearance, Kevon Bynum pleaded guilty to his involvement in Johnson's murder, as well as another deadly shooting that claimed the lives of a mother and her three-month-old baby. For his role in these violent acts, Bynum was sentenced to 52 years in prison. Following Johnson's death, his family and friends gathered for a vigil to remember and honor his life.
