In the early morning hours of a Monday in Richmond, Virginia, the sound of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn stillness. On October 21, 2024, at approximately 1:26 a.m., police responded to a report of random gunfire in the 5400 block of Hull Street Road. Arriving at a parking lot in the area, officers discovered a grim scene with three adults suffering from gunshot wounds.
Among the victims was 19-year-old Samir Mejia-Zelaya, a male resident of Richmond.
He was found unresponsive and tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The two other victims, a male and a female, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Richmond Police Department opened a death investigation into the shooting. The Medical Examiner was tasked with determining the official cause and manner of death.
