In the summer of 2021, a violent encounter in a quiet Virginia community tragically cut short the life of Carlos Rican Roman, Jr. The 34-year-old man died from a gunshot wound on July 21, 2021, in a residence located in the 1400 block of Spring Grove Road in Spout Spring, a small community in Appomattox County. Charles Roosevelt Abbitt Jr., also of Spout Spring. Abbitt was taken into custody and initially faced a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Roman. The investigation proceeded through the legal system, delving into the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation between the two men.
Ultimately, the case did not go to a full trial on the initial murder charge. Instead, Charles Roosevelt Abbitt Jr. entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter for the killing of Carlos Roman, Jr. Following his guilty plea, Abbitt was sentenced in August 2022 to 15 years in prison, with seven of those years suspended.
