In a quiet Woodbridge, Virginia home, a horrific scene unfolded that ended the lives of four people, including 44-year-old Miguel Duran Flores. On October 17, 2022, Flores, his wife Kelly Victoria Sotelo, 42, her 19-year-old daughter Karrie Ayline Sotelo, and a tenant, 36-year-old Richard Julio Jesus Revollar Corrales, were all killed in the residence they shared. Flores and Kelly Sotelo had recently been married.
The man responsible for the 'senseless' act was a 24-year-old housemate, David Nathaniel Maine. Maine himself called 911 on the afternoon of the murders, initially claiming an unknown person had entered the home and shot the occupants. However, investigators quickly determined his story was false, as there were no signs of a forced entry or gunshots from outside the house. Maine, who was described as a person who kept to himself, was located by police walking in the neighborhood and was detained.
The investigation revealed a brutal sequence of events. Maine first sexually assaulted and killed Karrie Sotelo, leaving her with a fatal knife wound to the neck. He also shot and killed the tenant, Richard Revollar Corrales. When Miguel Flores and Kelly Sotelo arrived home, Maine shot and killed Flores. Kelly Sotelo's 13-year-old daughter managed to run out of the house as her mother was heard screaming, 'David, no!'. Kelly Sotelo was also found shot and killed inside the home. Authorities found two firearms in the house, an AR-15 rifle and a. 22 caliber handgun, with the latter determined to have been used in the shootings. A note was later found on Maine's computer that read, 'I should not have killed them.'
David Nathaniel Maine was arrested and charged with four counts of second-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He later pleaded guilty to the four murders, as well as three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and one count each of rape, abduction, and forcible sodomy. For the heinous crimes, a judge sentenced Maine to six life sentences plus an additional 53 years in prison.
