In the winter of 2022, the life of 18-year-old Kebbren Isaiah Leigh-Gaye of Alexandria, Virginia, was tragically cut short. On the evening of January 8th, the recent graduate of Mount Vernon High School, known for his athleticism on the football field, found himself in a dispute with a 20-year-old acquaintance, Jordan Eugene Cochran. The argument, reportedly over a pair of shoes, escalated with deadly consequences at a bus stop in the Hybla Valley area of Fairfax County. Cochran shot Leigh-Gaye, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. This senseless act of violence marked the first homicide in Fairfax County for the year.
Following the shooting, Cochran fled the scene and attempted to carjack a driver in the parking lot of a nearby 7-Eleven. When the driver refused to comply, Cochran shot him in the eye, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Law enforcement quickly apprehended Cochran in the parking lot of a Taco Bell, where he was found in possession of a handgun and personal items belonging to Leigh-Gaye. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, robbery, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The legal proceedings that followed brought to light the chilling details of the crime. During the trial, it was revealed that Cochran had bragged about the shootings in a police video, expressing a disturbing sense of pride and stating that he had 'finally killed somebody.' In August 2024, a jury found Jordan Eugene Cochran guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. The conviction brought a measure of closure to Leigh-Gaye's grieving family and community, who remembered him as a kind and passionate young man with a promising future.
