On a sidewalk in Alexandria, Virginia, the life of 25-year-old Elijah Keith Williams came to a tragic end in the early morning hours of March 23, 2022. Williams was discovered unresponsive in the bushes in the 4500 block of Raleigh Avenue around 6:50 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation by the medical examiner would later reveal that he died from upper body trauma, ruling his death a homicide. This incident marked the first homicide in the city of Alexandria for that year.
More than a year after the discovery of Williams' body, a significant development in the case occurred with the arrest of 28-year-old Dontae LaShawn Drumgold of Prince William County. On May 9, 2023, authorities announced that Drumgold had been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. It was revealed that Drumgold was Williams' roommate, and the motive for the fatal shooting stemmed from a dispute over rent payments. Leading up to the murder, Williams had reportedly refused to cover Drumgold's portion of the rent, and they were facing eviction proceedings.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, prosecutors presented compelling evidence against Drumgold. Text messages indicated his anger over the lease and their living situation. Furthermore, entries from Drumgold's personal journal were admitted, in which he had fantasized about shooting someone in the head and the challenge of getting away with such a crime. One entry reportedly read, 'I prefer a bullet to the head, it typically does the trick, but see, the game is only fun if you don't get caught.' Evidence showed that Drumgold, aware of his roommate's daily routine, waited for him on the morning of March 23rd and shot him as he was leaving for work.
In May 2024, a jury found Dontae Lashaun Drumgold guilty of the first-degree murder of Elijah Williams and the use of a firearm in the commission of that felony. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 53 years in prison for his crimes. The lengthy sentence was deemed appropriate by the Commonwealth's Attorney, given the premeditated and planned nature of the murder. Following his release, Drumgold will be subject to five years of supervised probation.
