In the early morning hours of April 22, 2022, the life of 21-year-old Deonta A. Flythe Jr. was tragically cut short in Norfolk, Virginia. Gunfire erupted in the 1400 block of Shelton Avenue around 6:30 a.m., setting in motion a devastating chain of events. It is believed that Flythe was struck by the gunfire at this location before attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle.
A short time after the reported shooting, police were alerted to a single-vehicle crash in the 200 block of 35th
Street. There, they discovered Deonta A. Flythe Jr. inside the wrecked vehicle, suffering from a significant gunshot wound. He was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Flythe succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
In the wake of the young man's death, the Norfolk Police Department launched a homicide investigation. However, details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting have been scarce.
