On a tragic evening that began in celebration, 20-year-old Taborri J. Carter, a Black male, lost his life. The incident occurred on June 3, 2022, in Chester, Virginia, at a graduation party that had been promoted on social media. The gathering, held in the 10960 block of Stepney Road, descended into chaos, ultimately ending in gunfire.
Reports from that night indicate a party attended by a large crowd of 50 to 100 people. As the night progressed, multiple disturbances, including loud music and fights, were reported to the Chesterfield Police Department. Before officers could respond to these initial complaints due to other high-priority calls, the situation escalated dramatically. More than 50 shots were fired from at least four different weapons, creating a scene of panic and violence. When police arrived at approximately 10:21 p.m., they found Carter suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency aid rendered at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries.
The violence of that night left a wider scar on the community, with seven other individuals sustaining injuries. Five of these were gunshot wounds, while two others were injured by a vehicle as they fled the chaotic scene. The ensuing investigation led to the arrest of 18-year-old Andre L. Coleman of Hopewell, Virginia. Coleman was charged with second-degree murder, attempted malicious wounding, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. However, in a turn of events in May 2023, the Commonwealth's Attorney's office chose to set aside the charges against Coleman. This legal move, known as nolle prosequi, means that while the charges are dropped for now, they can be refiled in the future if new evidence comes to light. The investigation into the death of Taborri J. Carter remains active, as authorities continue to seek justice for the young man whose life was cut short.
