On a summer evening in June 2022, the life of 63-year-old Ronald Dennis 'Ronnie' Brunk was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On June 15, authorities were called to his office in Mount Crawford, Virginia, for what was initially reported as an unauthorized entry. Upon their arrival, they discovered Ronald on the floor, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed a family dispute as the catalyst for the violence. The focus of the investigation turned to Ronald's own brother, Richard Dwayne Brunk. It was determined that an argument between the two siblings had escalated to a devastating conclusion. Following the altercation, Richard retrieved a 12-gauge shotgun from his truck. When Ronald opened the office door again, Richard fired a single, fatal shot. Police later located Richard at his home in Weyers Cave, where he was taken into custody without resistance. A search of his residence uncovered a bloodied shirt, which forensic analysis confirmed had Richard's own blood on it.
In November 2023, Richard Brunk stood trial for the murder of his brother. He was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The following April, a judge sentenced him to a total of 43 years in prison. The tragic story, however, did not end with his conviction. While incarcerated, Richard faced further accusations of orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot. The alleged targets were the prosecuting attorney in his case, Marsha Garst, and his own sister. He was subsequently indicted on two counts of murder for hire in the fall of 2023, adding another dark chapter to the family's story.
