In the quiet evening of September 3, 2022, the life of 15-year-old Demarion D. Sanders, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Roanoke, Virginia. Around 7:45 p.m., Roanoke Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 1000 block of Palm Avenue NW. Upon their arrival, they discovered Demarion outside a residence with a critical gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response and efforts of Roanoke Fire-EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, the investigation began with no suspects and no immediate arrests, leaving a community searching for answers.
As the Roanoke Police Department delved into the homicide investigation, a suspect was eventually identified. Detectives pointed to 23-year-old Demarco C. Jackson of Roanoke as the individual responsible for Demarion's death. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of First Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. The search for Jackson extended beyond Virginia, and on September 24, 2022, he was located and taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in Houston, Texas. After initially refusing extradition, Jackson was transported back to Roanoke in October to face the charges.
The legal proceedings that followed took an unexpected turn. The murder charges against Demarco Jackson were ultimately dismissed. This outcome was the result of a juvenile witness declining to testify under oath. Later, in August 2024, Jackson faced new legal troubles when he was arrested on separate drug and firearm charges. However, these charges were also dismissed by prosecutors in a legal maneuver known as nolle prosequi, which allows for the possibility of the charges being brought back in the future. In a poignant moment of remembrance, Demarion's mother, Latoya Sanders, walked across the stage at William Fleming High School's graduation to accept her late son's diploma.
