On the evening of September 12, 2022, 15-year-old Tynashia “Nae” Humphrey was walking to a store in her Gilpin Court neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia, when her life was tragically cut short. An honor roll student at Armstrong High School, she was caught in the crossfire of a gang-related drive-by shooting and was struck by a bullet not intended for her. Humphrey was found unresponsive on the sidewalk and was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was a female who had lost her mother to cancer a few years prior and was being raised by her grandmother.
The investigation into the senseless killing led authorities to identify five suspects, all members of a Henrico County gang known as the 30 Boys. Though the perpetrators were masked and fired through partially lowered car windows, surveillance footage from the area helped detectives identify the two vehicles involved, which ultimately led them to the five individuals. The suspects were charged with first-degree murder, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and attempted first-degree murder, among other charges.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of justice for Tynashia's family and the community. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Katherine Groover successfully prosecuted all five defendants. Two of the suspects, 24-year-old Savonne Henderson and 21-year-old Tyree Coley, pleaded not guilty and went to trial. Ultimately, two of the defendants received life sentences for their roles in the shooting. The remaining three suspects subsequently pleaded guilty and were given lengthy prison sentences. The combined sentences for all five individuals totaled over 200 years.
