Jermaine Huntley, a 28-year-old man, was fatally shot in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on the morning of Thursday, April 10, 2014. The incident occurred on the 1200 block of Washington Avenue. After being shot, Huntley was transported by a private vehicle to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:28 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting was a joint effort between the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Asbury Park Police Department. Their investigation determined that the shooting was a drive-by. The suspect was identified as Jacquil Jones, then 25, of Farmingdale. Authorities concluded that Jones was driving on Washington Avenue when he encountered Huntley and fired a single shot, which proved to be fatal.
Jones then fled the scene in his vehicle.
On July 2, 2014, Jacquil Jones was arrested in connection with the murder of Jermaine Huntley. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. Following his arrest, Jones was held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on a $1.2 million cash-only bail. In March 2015, a Monmouth County grand jury returned a three-count indictment against Jones for the murder and weapons charges. If convicted, he faced a maximum sentence of life in prison.
