God Justice Allah was a 21-year-old Black man from Asbury Park, New Jersey, who was embracing his role as a young father. To his family, he was a much-loved and loyal person who was accepting the growing responsibilities in his life. But his future was stolen from him on a winter afternoon in his own community.

On Thursday, February 2, 2023, the sound of gunfire shattered the calm at approximately 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Ridge and Springwood Avenues. When Asbury Park police officers arrived, they discovered Allah with a critical gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to Jersey Shore Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment, but his injuries proved fatal. He was pronounced dead shortly before 2:45 p.m.

A joint investigation was swiftly launched by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Asbury Park Police Department. Within days, investigators identified two local men as suspects in the fatal shooting. On February 10, authorities located and arrested 30-year-old Eddy Vilus without incident during a traffic stop. The second man, 31-year-old Quamere M. Smith, was already being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on unrelated charges when he was formally charged in connection with Allah's death.

Both Vilus and Smith, residents of Asbury Park, were charged with a litany of serious offenses. The charges included first-degree murder, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The list continued with accusations of second-degree conspiracy to commit arson, third-degree theft, and third-degree hindering the apprehension of oneself and another. The hindering charge against Smith specifically alleged that he had destroyed evidence related to the crime.

Following their arrests, both men were held in the county jail to await their court proceedings. The case ultimately resulted in a conviction for the murder of God Justice Allah. The man found guilty of the killing was sentenced to life in prison, bringing a measure of resolution to the case.
