On August 9, 2023, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Asbury Park Police responded to a report of a shooting on Atkins Avenue between Adams Street and Boston Way. Upon arrival, officers discovered 27-year-old Derek L. Bussey of Asbury Park suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after midnight on August 10.
