In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the life of Derek L. Bussey, a 27-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 9, 2023, shortly after 11:45 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night on Atkins Avenue, between Adams Street and Boston Way. When officers from the Asbury Park Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Bussey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
