In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the life of Derek L. Bussey, a 27-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 9, 2023, shortly after 11:45 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night on Atkins Avenue, between Adams Street and Boston Way. When officers from the Asbury Park Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Bussey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were quickly summoned, and Bussey was
rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, his injuries proved too severe. He was pronounced deceased shortly after midnight, marking the beginning of a homicide investigation into the violent end of a young life.
