In the summer of 2019, on the evening of Friday, June 14th, the life of 23-year-old Jehadje McMillian was tragically cut short in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Gunshots erupted around 10:44 p.m. in the 1100 block of Atlantic Avenue, prompting numerous 911 calls. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered McMillian in a courtyard, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Jehadje McMillian, a resident of both Asbury Park and Neptune, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019. His death sparked an intensive investigation led by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, leading to a manhunt for those responsible for the fatal shooting.
Several months later, in September 2019, authorities made a series of arrests in connection with the homicide. Four men were taken into custody and subsequently indicted in January 2020 for their roles in the events that led to McMillian's death. The individuals charged were identified as Scimel Jackson, then 28, of Lakewood, along with Prince Young, 22, Chyrod Freeman, 21, and Jahquan Allah, 25, all from Asbury Park. Young and Freeman faced charges of murder, while the others faced various weapons and other related offenses, bringing a measure of progress in a case that had deeply affected the community.
