In the late evening hours of November 2, 2021, the life of 24-year-old Dymir Leonard was cut tragically short on the streets of Asbury Park, New Jersey. Shortly after 9:45 p.m., an off-duty Asbury Park police lieutenant discovered Leonard at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Bangs Avenue. Leonard had been shot and was in dire need of medical attention.
He was quickly transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, but despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in the early morning of November 3, 2021. An autopsy later confirmed that a gunshot wound to the chest was the cause of death, and the case was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting of the male victim quickly pointed to a suspect, identified as 34-year-old Mark D. Walker, II, of Woodbridge, Virginia. Authorities began a manhunt for Walker, which culminated in a dramatic and tense standoff just days later. On November 5, members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office attempted to execute a search warrant at an apartment in Long Branch where Walker was located. The situation escalated when Walker shot a detective in the leg and then barricaded himself inside the residence with a two-week-old infant.
What followed was a harrowing nine-hour standoff with law enforcement. In a desperate attempt to escape, Walker set fire to the apartment building to create a diversion. He then emerged from the burning building, using the infant as a human shield while firing at officers. The confrontation ended when three SWAT team members returned fire, fatally wounding Walker. The infant was miraculously unharmed during the ordeal. With Walker's death, the primary suspect in Dymir Leonard's murder was no longer at large, bringing a violent end to the investigation.
