In the early hours of a spring morning in Jersey City, New Jersey, a selfless act of courage tragically cut short the life of 25-year-old Darren Maurice Talington. On April 26, 2014, the man affectionately known as 'Reese' was inside the A-Plus Deli on Grove Street when he witnessed a man accosting a woman. Without hesitation, Talington stepped in to defend her.
The confrontation moved outside the deli, where the situation escalated with fatal consequences.
Talington was shot multiple times. He was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he died from his injuries with his brother by his side. Known for his infectious smile and kind heart, Talington's death sent shockwaves through the community. He was a graduate of Snyder High School, where he played basketball, and had studied special education in college. At the time of his death, he had just passed his physical exam to join the Jersey City Fire Department, hoping to follow in his older brother's footsteps.
The investigation into Talington's murder led to the arrests of two brothers, Daquan and Sammy Mixson. Sammy Mixson was subsequently charged with the murder of Darren Talington. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office utilized surveillance footage from inside the deli, which showed Talington's heroic intervention, in their appeal for witnesses to come forward. In the wake of his death, Talington was remembered as a loving and caring individual who would do anything for anybody, a man whose final act was a testament to his character. The Jersey City Fire Department posthumously honored him with a badge and helmet.
