In the early morning hours of a November Saturday, the stillness of a Jersey City neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. It was near the intersection of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive on November 13, 2021, that police responded to the alerts of shots fired. There, they discovered 41-year-old Ishamell Alameen McCany, a male resident of the city, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
Rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, his life tragically could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the death of McCany fell to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, which began the painstaking process of piecing together the events of that fatal morning. For weeks, the case remained under active investigation, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. The initial reports following the shooting indicated that no suspects had been immediately identified or taken into custody, leaving a community searching for answers and a family grappling with a sudden and violent loss.
Months after the shooting, a significant breakthrough was made in the investigation. In January 2022, authorities tracked a suspect to Raleigh, North Carolina. Anthony King, a 34-year-old from Jersey City, was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and charged with the murder of Ishamell McCany. The pursuit of justice did not end there. In March of the same year, a second individual, 33-year-old Damean Bates of West Orange, was also located and arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina. Bates faced charges of attempted murder in connection with the incident that led to McCany's death. Both men were slated for extradition to New Jersey to face the charges brought against them.
