In the summer of 2014, a tragic incident cut short the life of 12-year-old Genesis Rincon. On the evening of July 5th, Genesis was enjoying a family gathering in Paterson, New Jersey. She, along with two friends, decided to take a scooter to a nearby store. On their way back, as they traveled along Rosa Parks Boulevard, the unthinkable happened. Shots rang out, and a stray bullet struck Genesis in the head. She was rushed to St.
Joseph's Regional Medical Center, where she was declared brain-dead. Her family made the difficult decision to donate her organs, an act that saved the lives of five other children.
The senseless violence that claimed Genesis's life was the result of a gang-related shootout. Investigators determined that the shots were fired from a white van, and Genesis was not the intended target. The community of Paterson was outraged by the death of the young girl, leading to protests and demands for justice. The public pressure played a role in the subsequent arrests and legal proceedings.
Three individuals were ultimately charged in connection with the shooting. Jhymiere Moore, who was identified as the gunman, turned himself in to the police. Jeffery Ellerbee and Marshae Anthony were also arrested. Following a trial that ended in a hung jury and a mistrial, Jhymiere Moore eventually pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in Genesis's death, as well as to the killing of another individual in a separate incident. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her death.
Jeffery Ellerbee also pleaded guilty to charges related to the shooting and received a five-year sentence. Marshae Anthony, who supplied the weapon used in the shooting, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time served. During the sentencing, Genesis's father expressed his forgiveness to Moore, attributing the tragedy to the destructive nature of street violence.
