In the late evening of September 20, 2014, Nazerah Bugg, a 14-year-old female, was fatally struck by a stray bullet in Paterson, New Jersey. An aspiring basketball star who had just begun her freshman year at International High School, she was walking with friends near a chicken restaurant on Clinton Street when gunfire erupted. The shooting was the result of an ongoing neighborhood dispute, and Nazerah was not the intended target.
A bullet pierced her heart and lung, tragically ending the life of a promising student-athlete known for her talent on the basketball court. Another teenager with her was also shot but survived.
The investigation into Nazerah's death led to the indictment of ten individuals on charges including murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors described the incident as a gang-related drive-by shooting where at least 15 shots were fired from different caliber weapons. Among those charged were Jeavonte Dennis, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, and Nyje Johnson. The case was eventually moved from Passaic County to Bergen County due to a conflict of interest, as one of Nazerah's relatives was an employee of the Passaic County court system.
Following a trial, Jeavonte Dennis was found guilty of first-degree murder, while Nyje Johnson was convicted of first-degree aggravated manslaughter. Dennis was sentenced to 45 years in state prison, and Johnson received a 22-year sentence. Both were also convicted on conspiracy and weapons charges. Several other co-defendants were also charged in connection with the shooting. Two of the ten individuals indicted accepted plea deals. In the wake of her death, the community mourned the loss of the young athlete, and a portion of a street in Paterson was renamed in her honor to preserve her memory.
