On December 28, 2015, Simms, a Black female, was inside Andy's Liquors and Bar on North 7th Street, a local spot she was known to frequent. Around 11:15 p.m., the ordinary evening turned into a scene of violence when a gunman entered the establishment and began shooting.
In the chaos that ensued, both Nijatolle Simms and an unidentified man in his 30s were struck by
gunfire. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and both victims were transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Simms succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The condition of the male victim who was wounded in the shooting was not publicly disclosed.
