In September 2014, a domestic dispute in Paterson, New Jersey, ended in the tragic death of 26-year-old Jackie Delarosa-Rodriguez. The young woman was fatally shot in the head in the garage of her home. The events leading up to her death began with an argument with her ex-boyfriend, which witnesses overheard shortly before the sound of gunshots pierced the night.
The perpetrator, 30-year-old Perfis Pena-Nunez of Paterson, turned himself in to the authorities at police headquarters around 10:20 p.m. on the night of the incident. He confessed to having a problem with his girlfriend, leading officers to discover Delarosa-Rodriguez's body.
Pena-Nunez was subsequently charged with murder and weapons offenses.
In May 2016, Perfis Pena-Nunez pleaded guilty to the murder of his ex-girlfriend. He expressed shame and regret for his actions, stating that he didn't mean to do it and wasn't thinking properly on that fateful day. Following his guilty plea, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the death of Jackie Delarosa-Rodriguez.
