Hazel Loretta Paquin Tanis was a 56-year-old white woman in Paterson, New Jersey when, in the early hours of June 17, 1966, she stepped into the Lafayette Bar and Grill at the corner of East 18th and Lafayette Streets, a small neighborhood place where she was known by name.
