On the evening of October 7, 2014, Marquet Dorsey, a 30-year-old Black male from Newark, New Jersey, was sitting in his vehicle parked in front of 5 Thomas Avenue in his home city. It was around 9 p.m. when the night was shattered by the sound of multiple gunshots. When emergency responders arrived, they found Dorsey suffering from several gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into Dorsey's murder began immediately, with law enforcement working to piece together the events that led to his untimely death. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, took the lead on the case. They determined that Dorsey had been shot multiple times, leading to his death. In an effort to generate leads, the authorities reached out to the public for assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible for this violent act.
As part of their public appeal, investigators released information about a suspect's vehicle and a surveillance photograph of a suspect that was reportedly taken moments before the shooting. To further incentivize community cooperation, the Essex County Sheriff's Crimestoppers Program offered a $5,000 reward for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case. Despite these efforts and the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the murder of Marquet Dorsey. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for Dorsey and his family.
