On a Saturday afternoon in the fall of 2014, a sense of normalcy was shattered on a residential street in Irvington, New Jersey. Thirty-three-year-old Keith Burton, a Black male, was walking along the 300 block of Myrtle Avenue around noon on October 25th when he was shot. The gunfire left him with a serious wound to his leg. Emergency services responded to the scene and transported Burton to University Hospital in nearby Newark for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical
professionals, Burton ultimately succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, turning a midday shooting into a homicide investigation. The Irvington Police Department, in conjunction with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The community was left unsettled by the brazen violence that had erupted in their neighborhood in broad daylight.
The investigation led authorities to a suspect, a 37-year-old man from Newark. Following his arrest, he faced a series of grave charges, including first-degree murder, felony murder, conspiracy, and several weapons offenses related to the use of a firearm in the commission of the crime. While an arrest was made, a motive for the shooting was not publicly disclosed, leaving it unclear whether there was any prior relationship between Burton and the man accused of ending his life. The arrest, however, brought a measure of resolution to a community troubled by the violent loss of one of its own.
