On a cold December evening in 2014, the life of a young man was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Bilal Salaam, a 21-year-old Black man from Galloway Township, was in Pleasantville, New Jersey, on the evening of Thursday, December 11th. At approximately 8:29 PM, the sound of gunshots echoed near the corner of Seagrass Cove and Ridgewood Avenue, a quiet residential area. When police responded to the scene, they found Salaam suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from law enforcement, his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the shooting was swiftly initiated by the Pleasantville Police Department and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit. While authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the young man's death, the night's violence had not yet concluded. Later that same evening, more gunshots were reported on the 400 block of Alder Avenue, not far from the initial scene. In this second incident, two homes were struck by bullets.
