On a spring afternoon in Pleasantville, New Jersey, the life of 26-year-old Maurice Hampton, a male also known by the name Abdul Hamid, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded on Thursday, April 8, 2021, when gunfire erupted on the 100 block of Linden Avenue. Responding to 9-1-1 calls shortly before 3 p.m., police officers arrived to a chaotic scene where they found Hampton deceased from gunshot wounds.
The violence of that day was not limited to a single victim.
Two other young men, 18-year-olds Messiah Burton and Shilameen Henderson, both from Pleasantville, were also struck by bullets. They were quickly transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where they received treatment for their injuries and ultimately survived the harrowing ordeal. The shooting sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a thorough investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit in conjunction with the Pleasantville Police Department.
The investigation into the triple shooting led to a significant development several months later. In August 2021, authorities announced the arrest of 18-year-old Karim Rice of Pleasantville. Following an intensive investigation, Rice was charged with the murder of Maurice Hampton. In addition to the murder charge, he faced two counts of attempted murder for the injuries sustained by Burton and Henderson. Rice was also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was subsequently taken into custody and held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending further legal proceedings.
