In the early hours of March 8, 2015, the life of 22-year-old Damian Mills of Vineland, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Mills was sitting in a parked car on West Grape Street in Vineland with three other people when the shooting occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Another male passenger, Kevin Peterson, was also fatally wounded in the attack, succumbing to his injuries at a local hospital.
A female passenger sustained a gunshot wound but survived, while a fourth individual in the vehicle was unharmed. The violent encounter left the community shaken and searching for answers.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to two suspects: Sheldon Goldsborough Sr. and Michael R. Loftin Jr. A crucial piece of evidence, a flip phone found near the crime scene, contained DNA that was a positive match for Loftin. Further investigation revealed that cell phone data placed Goldsborough at the location of the shooting at the time it occurred. This evidence suggested a coordinated effort in the ambush that claimed the lives of Mills and Peterson. Both men were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the killings, setting the stage for a lengthy legal process to bring justice for the victims and their families.
The legal proceedings for the two men resulted in significant prison sentences, although neither was convicted of murder. Michael R. Loftin Jr. was acquitted of the murder charges but was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. For his role in the crime, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Sheldon Goldsborough Sr. also saw the murder charges against him dropped, but he was convicted of aggravated manslaughter for his part in the deaths of Damian Mills and Kevin Peterson. He received a 45-year prison sentence. The convictions and sentencings of both men brought a measure of closure to a case that had long cast a shadow over the Vineland community.
