In the early morning hours of May 24, 2020, what initially appeared to be a single-car accident in Vineland, New Jersey, quickly escalated into a homicide investigation. Responding to the scene at Chestnut Avenue and South West Boulevard around 3:03 a.m., officers with the Vineland Police Department discovered 31-year-old Travis Douglas of Randallstown, Maryland, inside the vehicle. It was soon determined that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite efforts to revive him, Douglas succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Investigators pieced together that Douglas had been driving on West Chestnut Avenue when another vehicle pulled alongside his car. Multiple rounds were fired into the driver's side of Douglas's vehicle, leading to the fatal shooting. The investigation revealed that the incident was a targeted drive-by shooting. There were two other individuals in the vehicle with Douglas at the time of the attack. One of these passengers was also struck by gunfire several times and was treated for his wounds before being released from the hospital. The third occupant of the car was not injured in the shooting.
The subsequent investigation by the Vineland Police Department and the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office led to the identification of two suspects. Wayne Broughton, 29, and Sharay Palmer, 23, both of Vineland, were charged with murder and numerous other offenses in connection with the death of Travis Douglas. Palmer was apprehended in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and awaited extradition to New Jersey. Broughton was later arrested in Millville, New Jersey, by the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit and the United States Marshals Service. The charges against both individuals included first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted homicide, bringing a measure of resolution to a violent end to a young man's life.
