Armoni Moni Keavon Sexton, a 15-year-old Black male, was walking near the intersection of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue on April 18, 2015, when he was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. as Armoni was heading home to make his 9 p.m. curfew.
Struck by gunfire, he was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning. The investigation later revealed that Armoni was an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the violence, which stemmed from an ongoing feud between rival street gangs. Three other people were also wounded in the attack but were expected to survive.
Armoni was a celebrated basketball prodigy at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology. Standing at six feet seven inches tall, he was a talented player who many believed was on a path to a professional career, with dreams of one day playing for the University of Kentucky and then in the NBA. His death sent shockwaves through the Paterson community, where he was remembered as a gifted athlete with a bright future. Friends, family, and coaches mourned the loss of a young man who they described as having the potential to be 'the next great one' to come out of the city.
In the wake of the shooting, the Paterson Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to arrests. Two men were apprehended and charged in connection with Armoni's murder. The shooter was identified as Gregory Oliver, who later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting. The driver of the vehicle used in the drive-by, Hasmeek Coles, also accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter and received a 13-year prison sentence. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice to Armoni's grieving family and a community plagued by gang violence.
