In the early morning hours of June 4, 2015, the life of 35-year-old Darcel Rivers, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short on a street in Jersey City, New Jersey. Rivers was discovered unresponsive on the sidewalk in front of 117 Fulton Avenue at approximately 3:45 a.m., suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He was swiftly transported to Jersey City Medical Center, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m.
The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound and officially classified the case as a homicide.
At the time of his death, Rivers was visiting Jersey City from Providence, Rhode Island, where he was pursuing his dream of becoming a chef by attending culinary school. He had been staying at his mother's house on Fulton Avenue with his children. On the night he was killed, he had been out with friends and was only a block away from his mother's home when he was reportedly robbed of his phone and money before being fatally shot. The son of Jersey City Fire Chief Darren E. Rivers, his death sent shockwaves through the community and left his family, including his four children and his mother, Deloris Gibson, devastated.
Despite the passage of time and public appeals for information from his grieving family, the murder of Darcel Rivers remains unsolved. The investigation, led by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, is ongoing, but no arrests have been made in connection with his killing. The identity of the person or persons responsible for his death is still unknown, leaving a painful void for a family still seeking justice and closure for a life taken too soon.
