In the early morning hours of a summer Saturday in Jersey City, the life of 19-year-old Jordan Herron was tragically cut short. On July 20, 2019, at approximately 12:45 a.m., the sound of gunfire echoed in the area of New Heckman Drive. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a chaotic situation with two other young men, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old, suffering from gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening.
They were promptly transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.
Amid the confusion, Jordan Herron, who had also been shot, was privately taken to Bayonne Medical Center. Despite the efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after 1:00 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of his death was a gunshot wound to the chest, and the manner of death was officially ruled a homicide. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit launched an active investigation with the assistance of the Jersey City Police Department. According to federal court documents, Jordan Herron, who was also known by the nickname '23,' was an associate of the Curries Woods Enterprise, a neighborhood street gang. These legal filings, which detailed various criminal activities and rivalries between different gangs, noted that members of the Curries Woods Enterprise would pay homage to Herron after his death. While these documents have provided a broader context of the violent environment in which Herron lived and died, there has been no public announcement of any arrests or the identification of any specific suspects in connection with his murder.
