In the late hours of a Tuesday in Jersey City, the sound of gunshots shattered the night, leading to the discovery of a man's lifeless body. On June 26, 2018, police responded to a report of gunfire in the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Bidwell Avenue. Upon their arrival around 11:25 p.m., they found 31-year-old Darrell Rush in the street near 199 Bidwell Avenue. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before midnight.
The cause of his death was later determined to be a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the death of Darrell Rush, a male resident of Jersey City, quickly led to a suspect within his own family. A few days after the shooting, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department arrested Tavon Rush, the 35-year-old cousin of the victim. The arrest was made without incident on Grant Avenue in Jersey City.
Tavon Rush was subsequently charged with aggravated manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of his cousin. He also faced several weapons-related charges, including possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. Authorities did not immediately release a motive for the shooting. The arrest brought a swift, yet tragic, development to the investigation, pointing to a family member as the alleged perpetrator in Darrell Rush's untimely death.
