In the early morning hours of February 28, 2016, a dispute that began at a party inside the Inn of the Dove motel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, spilled out into the parking lot with deadly consequences. Jadyre Gordon, a 17-year-old male from Camden, was shot while sitting in the backseat of a car that was leaving the motel complex on Cuthbert Boulevard.
The shooting, which occurred around 2:24 a.m., also resulted in injuries to a 20-year-old Willingboro man and a female passenger, who was hurt by shattered glass.
In the immediate aftermath, Gordon and the other man who was shot were driven in a private vehicle to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden. From there, Gordon was transferred to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:37 a.m. The other victim was treated for his injuries and subsequently released.
An investigation into the shooting was launched by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Cherry Hill Police Department. In the weeks that followed, authorities identified 21-year-old Kevin Fentress of Burlington City as the suspect in the fatal shooting. A manhunt ensued, and Fentress was eventually located and apprehended by U.S. Marshals on May 6, 2016, at an acquaintance's home in Marietta, Georgia. He was taken into custody without incident and extradited back to New Jersey to face charges.
In August 2017, a grand jury indicted Fentress on five counts, including first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses. Following his indictment, he was held in the Camden County Jail pending trial.
