In the early hours of Easter Sunday, the quiet of a Cherry Hill, New Jersey apartment complex was shattered by the sound of gunfire, leaving a 64-year-old man, Leopold McKoy of Bear, Delaware, dead. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on April 4, 2021, in the parking lot of the Sergi Farms apartment complex on Abbey Road. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered McKoy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
It was not immediately clear why McKoy was at the Cherry Hill apartment complex.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 26-year-old Tymere Brown of Cherry Hill. Multiple witnesses at the scene identified Brown as the individual who had shot McKoy. Following the shooting, a manhunt for Brown was initiated by law enforcement. Neighbors in the ordinarily peaceful community were left shaken by the violent event that had unfolded in their midst. One resident recalled hearing the gunshots and looking out the window to see McKoy lying on the ground.
A few days later, on April 7, 2021, Tymere Brown was located and apprehended at an apartment in Wilmington, Delaware. His arrest was the result of a coordinated effort by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force from both the Camden and Wilmington divisions. Brown was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, as well as weapons offenses, in connection with the death of Leopold McKoy. Following his arrest in Delaware, he was held pending extradition to New Jersey to face the charges against him. The motive for the shooting was not immediately released by authorities.
