On the night of May 26, 2016, in Jersey City, New Jersey, a burst of gunfire shattered the late-evening quiet near the corner of Stegman Street and Bergen Avenue. When the violence subsided, one man lay dead and another was seriously wounded. The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Tyrell Franklin, a resident of the city. He was discovered in the peaceful expanse of Audubon Park, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the upper part of his body.
Despite the prompt arrival of emergency services, Mr. Franklin was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m., also left another Jersey City man, 33-year-old Tavon Rush, with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Mr. Rush was found nearby on Stegman Street and was quickly transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. The dual shooting prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department as they worked to piece together the events of that tragic night and bring those responsible to justice.
In the months that followed, the investigation led authorities to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. On August 9, 2016, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced that an arrest warrant had been issued for 20-year-old Quashawn Jackson, also of Jersey City. The warrant charged Jackson with the murder of Tyrell Franklin, the attempted murder of Tavon Rush, and several weapons-related offenses. Law enforcement officials publicly appealed for information regarding Jackson's whereabouts, cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
