In the early evening of March 6, 2017, Nafis Jahad Treadwell, a 22-year-old Black or African American male from East Orange, New Jersey, was fatally shot in Newark. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the 100 block of Hawthorne Avenue. Treadwell was inside a vehicle when he was struck by gunfire.
Following the shooting, the vehicle Treadwell was in crashed. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find him suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, launched an investigation into the shooting.
Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the murder of Nafis Treadwell. The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information regarding the case to come forward to assist in the investigation. The case is still considered unsolved, leaving a community and a family searching for answers and justice for a life cut short by gun violence.
