On the evening of May 17, 2017, Edward Whittle Jr., a 30-year-old male, was shot multiple times in the 1300 block of Carl Miller Boulevard in Camden, New Jersey. The incident occurred at approximately 7:18 p.m. Responding to reports of a shooting, police discovered Whittle at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at about 9:17 p.m.
The investigation into the shooting led by the
Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Police Department identified Andrew Whittaker, then 23, of Sicklerville, as the suspect. Less than a month after the shooting, on June 9, 2017, Whittaker was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Whittle's death. At the time of his arrest, he was already in the Camden County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges.
Years later, the legal proceedings concluded with a plea deal. In September 2023, Andrew Whittaker pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and an additional charge of first-degree witness tampering that had been filed in March 2019. On November 15, 2023, a judge sentenced Whittaker to 25 years in New Jersey State Prison for the death of Edward Whittle Jr. He also received a concurrent 10-year sentence for witness tampering. Under the terms of his sentence, Whittaker is required to serve 85% of his 25-year term before becoming eligible for parole.
