In the early morning hours of a Friday in July 2017, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Camden, New Jersey neighborhood. When police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 12:17 a.m., they discovered Dasheem Funches, a 21-year-old male, in the vicinity of the 100 block of Pfieffer Street. He had been shot multiple times.

Emergency services transported Funches to Cooper University Hospital for treatment of his critical injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, ...
