On a late spring evening in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 22-year-old Rajee Montgomery was tragically cut short. On May 27, 2017, Montgomery was fatally wounded in a shooting that also left a woman injured. The incident occurred in the area of 15th Avenue and Fairmount Avenue, where authorities were dispatched following reports of gunfire.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Montgomery suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
He was rushed to University Hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The female victim, who was also shot, was transported to the same hospital by a private vehicle and received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the homicide.
