On the late evening of June 8, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered by gunfire on the 100 block of Goodwin Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. In the ensuing chaos, it was discovered that Nyasia Peppers, a 17-year-old female on the cusp of her high school graduation, had been struck by a stray bullet. Emergency services were called to the scene around 11:15 p.m., and Peppers was quickly transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Newark Police Department were able to determine that Peppers was an innocent bystander, not the intended target of the violence that claimed her life. The focus of their investigation quickly shifted to identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible for the senseless act. It was discovered that the suspects had fled the scene in a stolen blue Toyota C-HR. This vehicle was later found abandoned near Millington Avenue, providing a crucial piece of evidence for law enforcement.
Further investigation, including the review of surveillance footage, revealed that two individuals exited the stolen Toyota and made a swift transfer into what appeared to be a black Honda Accord before disappearing into the night. Despite these leads, the suspects have managed to evade capture, and no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation.
In an effort to bring justice to Nyasia Peppers and her grieving family, law enforcement officials have publicly appealed for information. A reward of up to $10,000 has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death.
