On the cold evening of February 4, 2021, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, a 32-year-old Black / African American man named Brandon Dante Williams was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 10:03 PM in the vicinity of Capen and Evans Streets. When police officers from the B-3 District arrived at the scene, they discovered Williams suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the location of the shooting.
Brandon Williams, a resident of Dorchester, was remembered by his family as a devoted and loving father to his young daughter. A year prior to his death, he had moved back to Boston from Jacksonville, Florida, specifically to care for her after she was hospitalized. To provide for his daughter, Williams worked three jobs. His family described him as a "beautiful soul" and the "peacemaker" in their family, a man who was infectiously happy and always willing to help others. He was the eldest of four children and cherished his role as a big brother. Beyond his dedication to his family, he had a passion for cooking and had co-founded a catering business called “King and Queens” with his mother and sister. He was also known for his love of fishing and coaching youth basketball.
The investigation into Brandon Williams's death was handled by the Boston Police Homicide Detectives. For several weeks, the case remained under active investigation with police appealing to the public for any information. Then, on the morning of Friday, April 9, 2021, a significant development occurred in the case. Officers from the Boston Police Fugitive Unit arrested a suspect in Mansfield, Massachusetts.
The individual taken into custody was identified as 25-year-old Darren Gillespie of Randolph. Gillespie was subsequently charged with the murder of Brandon Williams. In addition to the murder charge, he faced charges for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling. He was expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court. The arrest brought a measure of progress in a case that had deeply affected the victim's family and the wider community.
